FAQs for Athletes and Parents

 

+ Why is the Singapore Badminton Association working with Tangent?

Tangent and SBA want to highlight how professional athletes can have good employment potential in non-sports industries, because their mastery of non-cognitive skills like persistence, grit and focus also make them good hires in many sectors.

To highlight this, we want to map the athletes’ personality and non-cognitive traits. With these maps, we can match them against the individual companies that Tangent works with. Tangent will then highlight instances where the athletes would have qualified (had they been looking for a job).

+ What’s so important about personality traits and non-cognitive skills?

Personality traits and non-cognitive skills (also known as “soft” skills or social, emotional, and behavioural skills) are crucial for job performance. These are skills such as perseverance, conscientiousness, and self-control, as well as social skills and leadership ability. These skills have become more valuable over time, as shown by research by Nobel Laureate James Heckman, David Deming at Harvard, and others.1

However, employers find it difficult to identify talent with these skills. Recently a survey by Cengage (a US-based education and technology company) reported that soft skills were most in demand by employers (by at least 65 percent), while quantitative skills and computer and technical skills were less so (47 percent and 50 percent respectively). Even so, the majority of employers (73 percent) said it was very or somewhat difficult finding qualified candidates.2

+ What does the process entail?

We require each athlete to complete a short profiling exercise comprising 3 tools. These profile different aspects of her as an individual — what makes her unique, what she wants from her career, and what gives her job satisfaction and mastery. Completing all the questions should take about 30 mins.

+ How will taking part in Tangent benefit my child?

After finishing the questionnaires, each athlete will receive a personal profile of her traits and characteristics for her reference.

In the longer term, athletes and their parents will gain greater clarity on their employment potential in non-sports industries.

+ Why does my child need to set up an account to do the profiling tests?

Tangent’s partner is CXS, a learning analytics company. CXS provides the profiling tools via its “vip24” platform. The platform requires users to set up an account first.

CXS is an international learning analytics company with the capability to manage talent development from education to employability with a focus on preparing national workforces for the ever-changing demands of the 4th Industrial Revolution. + The account has a “My CV” page. Do I need to provide a CV?

You do not need to provide a CV in order to use and complete the profiling tools.

+ Is Tangent free?

Tangent, and the use of CXS’s profiling tools are all free. We will not sell your information to third parties. Tangent will only use your email address for updates (for instance when we find a match between your profile and a company benchmark). CXS may use your email to send you updates and tips on CXS products and services.

+ Who else has Tangent worked with?

We have successfully worked with alternative investment management firm Dymon Asia Capital to hire differently, and are working with other private sector clients. Tangent is honoured to work with SBA as our first NSA partner.

+ How can my child withdraw from the Tangent process if we change our mind?

Please contact us via our Contact page (https://www.gotangent.sg/contact). We will remove your records from ours and CXS’s systems promptly.
